Cinema Silencio (2016-ongoing)

Cinema Silencio is a roughly 30 minute long video work with sound and a black screen. For this project, I selected movies from the Korean File Archive Youtube Channel, representing Korean commercial films during the military dictatorship in the 1970s and removed all the scenes with any dialogue. Then I deleted all the images from the remaining scenes and left only the background noises and sound effects. I put these pieces of sound together. With this project, I hope to explore stories we might have lost or hidden within the movies because of the censorship of that period as if reading between the lines.

Some of the most well-known Korean films from the ‘70s are sampled for this project, including Heavenly Homecoming to Stars (1974), The Road to Sampo (1975), Crazy for You (1977), and Winter Woman (1977). These movies have been reborn as an approximately 30 minute long video work.

This work will be screened in a movie theatre, with a black screen at the front.

아무 말도 없는 영화 (2016-현재 진행 중)

이 프로젝트는 검은 화면을 배경으로 사운드가 나오는 30분 가량의 영상 작업이다. 우선 한국영상 자료원에서 유튜브에 공개한 한국영화들 중, 독재 정권 시대인 1970년대에 한국에서 제작 상영된 대표적인 상업 영화들을 택하여 등장인물들의 대화를 걷어내었다. 그리고 남아있는 부분에서 이미지는 없애고 오직 소음과 효과음 같은 소리들만을 이어 붙였다. 이 프로젝트를 통해, 행간에서 의미를 찾아내듯이, 검열이 엄격했던 그 시대에 잃어버리거나 감춰진 내러티브들을 찾아보고자 한다.

이 프로젝트에서는 1970년대 한국 영화의 대표작인 <별들의 고향> (1974), <바보들의 행진> (1975), <삼포(森浦)가는 길> (1975), <진짜 진짜 좋아해> (1977) ,<겨울 여자> (1977)등을 선택하였다. 이 영화들은 30분 가량의 하나의 영상 작업으로 재탄생되었다.

나는 이 작업을 전형적인 영화관과 같은 장소에서 검은 스크린을 앞에 두고 상영하고자 한다.
