You Were There (2015-ongoing)
You Were There consists of rocks covered with 24K gold leaf using Korean traditional techniques for covering Buddha statues. In ancient times, large rocks were believed to be sacred and many rituals took place centered around them.
However, during industrialization, those stones and rocks were considered obstacles and were removed to create a flat cityscape. Nonetheless, rocks are mysterious and enchanting materials that have accumulated time from the birth of the universe.
The tradition of gilding the Buddha statue originates from an effort to mimic the halo emanating from Buddha’s body when he reached enlightenment. In every detail of the rock, the crystallization of time is revealed and emphasized by the gold leaf that glazes its surface.
Like the Buddha statue, the act of gilding can also be a metaphor for a spiritual transformation of a being. I hope that this work can deliver a magical moment of transformation, perhaps even unifying North and South Korea.

<그곳에 있었다>는 불상을 덮는 한국의 전통 기법을 사용하여 24K 금박으로 덮은 바위로 구성된 연작입니다. 고대에는 큰 바위를 신성하게 여겨 바위를 중심으로 많은 의식이 행해졌습니다. 그러나 산업화 과정에서 돌과 바위는 장애물로 여겨져 평평한 도시 경관을 만들기 위해 제거되었습니다. 그럼에도 불구하고 돌과 바위는 우주의 탄생과 함께 시간을 축적해 온 신비롭고 매혹적인 재료입니다.
불상에 금을 입히는 전통은 부처가 깨달음을 얻었을 때 몸에서 퍼져 나온 후광의 색채를 흡사하게 하고자 하는 데서 비롯되었다고 합니다. 바위의 모든 디테일에서, 돌에 기록된 시간의 결정체들은 표면의 금박을 통해 드러나고 강조됩니다. 불상과 같이 금박을 입히는 행위는 존재의 영적 변화에 대한 비유일 수도 있습니다. 이 작품이 남북한이 통일되는 마법 같은 변화의 순간을 전달할 수 있기를 바랍니다.

You Were There: DMZ Project 2017 consists of rocks from conflict zones covered with 24K gold leaf using Korean traditional techniques for gilding Buddha statues. It was permanently installed in the Demilitarized Zone between North and South Korea (DMZ) in 2017.

<그곳에 있었다: DMZ 프로젝트 2017>는 불상에 금을 입히는 방식으로 분쟁 지역의 암석에 24 K 금박을 입혀 구성한 작품이다. 암석들은 남한의 최북단과 남단에서 가져왔다. 이 작품은 2017년 한국의 비무장 지대에 영구 설치되었다.

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Cheonggyecheon Restoration, the Seoul Metropolitan Government held an invitational public art competition, organized in partnership with the Seoul Facilities Corporation and implemented by theallim Co., Ltd. The winning artist is Yeesookyung, with the work You Were There_Cheonggyecheon 2025. You Were There_Cheonggyecheon 2025 consists of a rock-shaped sculpture inspired by Toad Rock at the summit of Bugaksan Mountain, overlaid with ceramic shards and gold leaf, accompanied by performance videos and sound that celebrate the birth of new beings. From Cheonggyecheon, looking toward Gyeongbokgung Palace, visitors can see Bugaksan, Seoul’s main mountain and the former source of Cheonggyecheon, with Toad Rock at its summit. One might imagine that the person who named the rock did so in the hope of invoking the toad’s symbolism of abundance and prosperity—this imagination became the starting point of the project. While preparing this project, Yeesookyung came across reports that unidentified ceramics were unearthed during the Cheonggyecheon restoration. Originating from earth, shaped by water, and born as distinct beings through fire, ceramics embody traces of everyday lives. This inspired her to merge the You Were There series with her representative work Translated Vases. In Translated Vases, discarded ceramic shards are reassembled, their “cracks” filled with “gold,” creating new forms of organic and unpredictable coexistence. Gold is not used to restore or heal but rather to highlight the event of breakage itself, discovering beauty in destruction. It becomes an alchemical material that transforms incomplete, fractured beings into sacred entities. Viewers of You Were There_Cheonggyecheon 2025 will not only appreciate the sculptural beauty but also engage in a multi-sensory experience through performance videos accessible via QR codes.
그곳에 있었다_청계천 2025 (2025)
서울특별시가 청계천 복원 20주년을 맞아 기획한 청계천 공공미술 프로젝트 지명공모에 당선된 <그곳에 있었다_청계천 2025>는 북악산 정상의 두꺼비 바위에서 영감을 받아 만든 바위 형태에 도자기 파편·금박을 덧씌운 작품과 새로운 존재의 탄생을 축원하는 일곱 팀의 공연으로 구성된다. 청계천에서 경복궁을 바라보면 서울의 주산이며 과거 청계천의 수원지인 북악산이 보인다. 그 정상에는 두꺼비 바위가 있는데 이 바위에 이름을 붙인 이는 두꺼비가 상징하는 풍요와 번영을 빌어 보지 않았을까 하는 상상이 이 프로젝트의 시작이다.
이번 작품을 준비하며 나는 청계천 복원 과정에서 이름 모를 수많은 도자기가 발견되었다는 기사를 발견했다. 흙에서 출발해 물을 만나 형태를 얻고, 불이라는 인고의 과정을 통해 피어난 도자기는 평범한 일상을 살아가던 사람들의 흔적이 담긴 존재가 아닐까 생각하며 <그곳에 있었다> 연작과 <번역된 도자기>를 결합한 이번 작업을 구상했다. <번역된 도자기>는 나의 대표작으로, 버려진 도자기 파편을 재구성해 ‘금(틈)’을 ‘금(金, gold)’으로 채우며 유기적이고 예측 불가능한 새로운 공존을 만드는 작업이다. 이 작업의 재료 중 하나인 금은 복원이나 치유를 위한 것이 아니라 오히려 부서짐의 사건을 더욱 두드러지게 하고, 파괴를 통한 아름다움을 발견하게 한다. 또한 완벽에 이르지 못해 파괴된 미완의 존재를 성스러운 존재로 변모시키는 연금술적인 재료이기도 하다. 작품을 보는 시민들은 미술의 아름다움을 감상하고, 동시에 QR코드를 통해 공연 관람을 하며 보는 것을 넘어선 다감각적 예술을 경험한다.

You Were There 2015
In You Were There 2015, I gilded 24k gold to two stones I found in a quarry. Gilded in the same manner and technique as gilding a Buddhist statue, I offered one of them to a Buddhist monk. I also gilded two stones which I received from the monk as his gift. I kept one of them, and the other was sent to another monk through the original monk. This act of exchange will be repeated in this manner.

<그곳에 있었다 2015>는 금불상에 금박을 입히는 전통방식을 이용해 내가 찾은 두 개의 돌에 금박을 입혀 제작한 작품이다. 이 중 하나를 스님께 드렸고, 그에 대한 보답으로 두 개의 다른 돌을 스님으로부터 받았다. 나는 그 두 개의 돌 역시 금박을 입한 후 그 중 하나는 내가 가지고 있기로 하고, 다른 하나는 돌을 주신 스님을 통해 다른 스님에게 전달 했다. 같은 방식의 교환을 반복하면서 이 작품은 계속 된다.
